The Challenges of Third Level Education… Getting it Right!
Many students start into their third level course, unsure if the course they have been offered is right for them.
A recent study carried out by the HEA shows that by the end of year 1 in college, 16-30% of students (depending in the college/I.T) will have left. These statistics are alarming and point to a need for greater investment in getting that course choice right!
This whole experience can be a costly one and can leave the student lacking in confidence and self-esteem.
At the students coach, we work quickly with the student, to ascertain their reasons for leaving. Once we are clear that the issue is an unsuitable course, we quickly help them establish their options and get some experience to ensure they have made the right choice this time. This will have the added benefit of building their confidence again.
Our experience shows that students can leave college for reasons other than wrong course choice:
• They can find the experience a very lonely one, particularly in the larger Universities, where lecture numbers are in the hundreds and it is difficult to make friends.
We work closely with the student in this instance to help them find the right solution, e,g joining a social club, moving accommodation and in some instances commuting from home.
• They lack a structure in getting on top of the work-load and can fail core modules.
We help provide a weekly plan, based on their timetable and follow up on their progress
